Passionflower, 145 mg
Passionflower is a climbing vine native to the Americas. It has been used for centuries as a mild calming herb. Modern research is limited but suggests it may ease anxiety and slightly lengthen sleep time. It can cause drowsiness or dizziness and should not be used during pregnancy.
Marshmallow root, 110 mg
Not the sweet, but the plant it was originally made from. The root contains mucilage, a slippery fiber that forms a soothing coating. It is traditionally used for coughs, sore throats and stomach irritation. Because it coats the gut, it may slow the absorption of medicines taken at the same time.
Corydalis, 100 mg
Corydalis yanhusuo is a tuber used in traditional Chinese practice for comfort. It contains natural alkaloids, the best known being tetrahydropalmatine. Much of the research involves purified compounds, not the whole herb. It can cause drowsiness, and rare cases of liver irritation have been reported with corydalis-containing products.
Prickly pear extract, 50 mg
Prickly pear is a cactus whose pads and fruit are eaten as food, especially in Mexico. The extract here is concentrated 20:1. It contains antioxidant pigments, and its best-studied use is a modest effect on blood sugar and cholesterol. People taking diabetes medicine should be aware of that.
California poppy seed, 45 mg
California poppy is the state flower of California and a traditional herb for nervousness and sleep. It is not the opium poppy. Research is limited and mostly in animals, and most traditional use involves the above-ground parts of the plant.
What the formula does not contain
NerveHarmony has no B vitamins, alpha-lipoic acid, acetyl-L-carnitine or lion's mane. Those are the ingredients most often discussed for nerve health, and they appear in a different product with a similar name. It also has no caffeine or other stimulants.
How the ingredients fit together
Three calming herbs, one soothing root and one antioxidant extract. The overall effect is geared toward comfort and relaxation. Human evidence for nerve health specifically is limited for all five, so realistic expectations are important.
